'HEARTLESS' MARKETS BOUNCE BACK FROM 9/11 - Today is the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on New York. It took the US stock market six weeks to recover from the collapse in share prices in the aftermath. If anything the resilience of the markets has improved in the wake of terrorist attacks in other financial centres such as Madrid and London.

Eugene Kiernan of AIB Investment Managers said world markets are up around 20% - and the Irish market 40% higher - compared with five years ago.

Mr Kiernan said markets were heartless, and asked themselves only two questions: how events would affect interest rates and profit levels. He said the answers to those two questions determined the direction of markets.

Trellidor Trojan security grilles protect major retailer

Trellidor Trojan security grilles protect major retailer

Break-ins to major stores often happen when staff are present in the stores after hours, re-stacking shelves, cleaning and replenishing tills. According to the British Retail Consortium, in 2004 burglaries cost the retail sector an estimated 213 million. The number of known burglaries and attempted burglaries decreased in 2004 to 23 per 100 outlets, from 31 per 100 outlets in 2003, below the five year average of 28 per 100.

The Trellicor Security Group has been working closely with retailers and Crime Reduction Offices to reduce commercial burglary and robbery. As a result of this collaboration, Trellidor Trojan was developed. The Trellidor Trojan is an LPCB SR Level 2 security grille for use in areas where the risks are high due to the value of the property being protected, the particular vulnerability of the site or the lack of natural surveillance or remoteness from a response unit.

She's first in county to undergo new surgery

She's first in county to undergo new surgery

Charlotte Rohrbaugh relied on the tried and true, on tradition: wedding vows, family meals and a grin-and-bear-it philosophy during the tough times.

She worked 53 of her 80 years as a registered nurse; she and her husband of 58 years, Ike Rohrbaugh, reared their daughter. She retired at 65 and began enjoying the golden years with Ike, their daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren.

Rohrbaugh said she knew hard work would have physical consequences, but resulting aches and pains were simply annoyances.

But aggravation turned debilitating in the late 1990s when her back problems were punctuated by throbbing pain in her shoulder. In 1998 doctors discovered an extensive tear in her right rotator cuff.

Subsequent surgeries lessened the West York resident's anxiety. She became the first person in York County to benefit from the latest device for shoulder replacement.

A tale of two city centers growing up in the suburbs

A tale of two city centers growing up in the suburbs

When Dadeland Mall opened in 1962, the area was known as ''Deadland,'' and Kendall Drive was the road to nowhere.

In Plantation, cows grazed along University Drive when the Broward Mall debuted in 1978.

Back then, Kendall and Plantation were typical bedroom communities filled with young families fleeing urban congestion. But today, these first-ring suburbs are becoming city centers of their own, full of multi-level retail, offices and residences.

''Mixed-use is what happens when an area starts to urbanize,'' said Bob Breslau, president of Stiles Retail, which has such projects underway in Plantation, Davie and Sunrise. ``It's a mind-set change. Where everybody is used to seeing single-story buildings, now things are going vertical.''

Dadeland is leading the way, with a condo canyon taking shape across from Dadeland Mall, driven by the arrival of Downtown Dadeland, Toscano, Metropolis and Colonnade.

Window Washer Critically Injured After 3-Story Fall

Window Washer Critically Injured After 3-Story Fall

MIAMI TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A local window washer is fighting for his life after falling three stories when his equipment malfunctioned.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Monday at the Newmark Corporate Center in Miami Township. The center is located off Route 741 where a mirrored glass building sits and was where 23-year-old Cory Bailey fell more than 60 feet to the ground.

Rescue workers arrived and found Bailey on the ground with the scaffolding on top of him.

The wheels on the scaffolding are designed to roll across the flat deck of the roof as the green arms stick out with the window washer attached to them.

Southtown Professional Window Cleaning has worked on the building for 15 years, and this was the first accident of its kind.
